SEND - Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
At Whitwell Primary School we believe in ensuring we meet the needs of all our children. We are an inclusive school and take pride in our provision for pupils with additional needs and disabilities. We believe in early intervention so when we identify a child experiencing a difficulty we work closely with parents and carers to offer support.
We use different interventions and approaches to address specific areas of need and would look carefully at your child's individual needs when deciding how best to support your child.
The four broad ‘areas of need’ within our school, focus upon:
- Communication and Interaction
- Cognition and Learning,
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties
- Sensory and Physical Needs
A significant number of children may need special educational provision at some time during their school lives. For some children, the provision may last for only a short period of time. However, for other children the provision may last longer.
The Education Reform Act ensured that all pupils shared the same statutory right to a broad and balanced curriculum, including the National Curriculum.
We can seek advice from a wide range of agencies. Our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator), Miss Laura Brown, oversees this work and offers additional support for parents and carers when required. You may contact Laura via the school office or by email: laurabrown@whitwell.derbyshire.sch.uk.
We have produced a Special Educational Needs Information Report which gives more information on how we support children with SEND in our school.
