Organisation

Whitwell Primary School opened its doors on September 1st 1984 after the amalgamation of two separate schools; Whitwell Infant School and Whitwell Junior School (now the village library and community centre). The Nursery opened in November 1988 making the school able to cater for children from 3 to 11 years.

At present, there are 251 children in school, including Nursery and the maximum number of children that could be admitted in a school year in each year group is 40 children from Reception to Year 6 and 52 in Nursery.

Currently, 2023-24, the children are organised into 9 classes. Two Early Years Foundation classes (Nursery and Reception), two Key Stage 1 classes , and five Key Stage 2 classes (three Year 3/4 and two Year 5/6). The Y5/6 classes are grouped as 3 parallel classes in the mornings for Guided Reading, English and Maths to reduce class sizes and to provide the children with high quality teaching.
