Maths

The children will be following the Power Maths scheme.

They will be developing skills in:

  • addition and subtraction

It further develops their estimation and answer-checking strategies and their problem-solving skills. This unit provides essential   preparation for beginning to add and subtract numbers with more than four digits.

  • area as a measure

Area is introduced by children using non-standard units and seeing how many of these will fit inside a shape. Children will be made aware of the need for standard units of measurement and will progress to measuring area by counting the number of centimetre squares that fit within a shape. This unit builds on children’s understanding of the properties of squares, rectangles and rectilinear shapes. It extends children’s basic comprehension of shapes being ’bigger’ or ’smaller’ than one another and gives them a tangible way of measuring this. Children already know how to measure the distance around a shape and now are taught how to measure the space inside it.

  • multiplication and division.

This unit is important because it focuses on learning multiplication and division facts – a core part of maths at Key Stage 2. Children explore multiplication and division, looking first at multiplying and dividing by 3, 6, 9, 7, 11 and 12, and then at multiplying and dividing by 0 and 1, the understanding of which is key to children’s mastery of this unit. This unit encourages children to use visual representations to tackle multiplication and division questions.

Multiplication Check

The Year 4 multiplication check will commence in June 2025.

The test will assess all of the children's times tables up to the 12 times table. There will be 25 random multiplication questions that the children will have 6 seconds to answer. The children are aiming to get all 25 correct. We will be helping the children to achieve this at school but any additional help and support with improving your child's times tables at home would be extremely beneficial. Times Table Rockstars is a really useful website to support times table practise and the website link to this is below.
